Project Objectives

Understanding the experiences of patients living with chronic conditions is essential for healthcare organisations seeking to improve treatment efficacy, patient support, and overall quality of life. In particular, conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis present unique challenges for patients, from diagnosis to ongoing disease management.

Through patient research, healthcare organisations can uncover real-world insights into the treatment journey, helping to shape products, services, and support initiatives that truly meet patient needs. A leading healthcare organisation commissioned this healthcare research study to explore the experiences of patients living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the United Kingdom. The research aimed to capture detailed insights into how patients navigate diagnosis, treatment, and disease management, as well as the impact of these conditions on daily life.

Research Objectives

The primary objective of this patient journey study was to understand the challenges and needs of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The client sought to explore experiences across different stages of treatment, including the effectiveness of therapies, support received during flare-ups, and interactions with healthcare providers.

The research also aimed to provide actionable insights for product development and patient support strategies, ensuring that treatments and services were aligned with patients’ expectations and real-world experiences.

Methodology and Fieldwork Logistics

The study employed a quantitative, online self-completion survey methodology, enabling patients to share their experiences in a convenient, private, and structured format. This approach was particularly suitable for patients with chronic conditions who may have variable energy levels and schedules.

The survey included 80 respondents, each living with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Each survey took approximately 30 minutes to complete, allowing respondents to provide detailed accounts of their treatment journey, challenges, and unmet needs.

To maximise engagement and ensure a high-quality sample, the research team proactively leveraged an upcoming charity event focused on Crohn’s disease. By partnering with event organisers and securing a sponsorship package, the team was able to reach over 100 attendees, exceeding the client’s initial recruitment target of 80 respondents.

Recruitment Challenges and Innovative Approaches

Recruiting patients for studies involving chronic conditions requires careful planning to ensure accessibility and representation. In this study, the research team implemented a proactive recruitment strategy that capitalised on a relevant community event. This approach enabled direct engagement with patients who were highly motivated to share their experiences.

By combining event-based recruitment with an online survey, the study captured rich, representative insights while providing participants with a convenient platform to contribute. This method helped overcome challenges associated with recruitment of a niche patient population.

Key Insights into Patient Journeys

The survey revealed that patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis face complex, ongoing challenges throughout their treatment journey. Respondents highlighted a need for more personalised treatment options tailored to their specific symptoms and lifestyle needs.

Support during disease flare-ups emerged as a significant concern. Many patients reported feeling that existing healthcare services did not always provide adequate guidance or immediate assistance during these periods. These findings indicated opportunities for healthcare providers to enhance patient support services, improve communication, and facilitate better access to resources.

The research also provided insights into patients’ interactions with healthcare professionals, adherence to prescribed treatments, and overall satisfaction with their care. By identifying common pain points and unmet needs, the study offered actionable guidance for improving patient experiences and outcomes.

Why This Research Matters

This study delivered valuable insights for the client in shaping patient-focused strategies for chronic gastrointestinal conditions. Understanding the patient journey allowed the healthcare organisation to refine product development and support services, ensuring treatments address the specific challenges faced by individuals living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

By highlighting areas for improvement in patient care, personalised treatment, and support during flare-ups, the research supports efforts to enhance quality of life for patients, improve treatment adherence, and strengthen the client’s overall healthcare offerings.
